The play Romeo and Juliet was written by William Shakespeare, during the Elizabethan Period. The Elizabethan age was known as England's Golden Age. It began with the crowning of Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1558 and ended with her death in 1603. Queen Elizabeth I was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn . She never married and was sometimes referrred to as the Virgin Queen.
During these 45 years England developed the strongest naval force in Europe after its defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. With the exception of taking defensive action against the invading Spanish Armada in 1588, she kept her country out of wars and foreign entanglements. Anyone who challenged her claim to the throne was severely punished, as was Queen Mary of the Scots who she executed in 1587. Queen Elizabeth I was fluent in English, French, Italian, Latin and Greek and a writer of poetry.
